Most free federal tax softwares offer free tax preparation for federal taxes and charge for filing state taxes. You can not ommit state tax unless you reside in those lucky states (TX, FL...). Does any one know any tax freewares that include state return.

Tax software companies need to make some money to stay in business. So the tactics they use to attract new customers and existing customers to continue use their software they offer one software free (fed) and charge for state.

I think if you want to Free State filing you need to contact the VITA or such free tax preparation services. There are some income limits for using it.
