The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers free tax help by trained volunteers if you qualify. VITA sites are located at convenient community locations, and volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation to individuals with earned incomes of $37,000 or less.

It just so happens I work full time for a non-profit organization, would this be a conflict of interest for me, if I bring up this type of service to our organization? Would this benefit or hurt me.

Marea,

If your non profit organization is doing FREE tax filing similar to that offered by VITA program, then you will be duplicating the effort. If not, then contact your local VITA center, as most of them are always looking for some sort of assistance like opening new tax preparations sites, donations (either computer, supplies,etc.). May be your organization and VITA can co-operate and offer much wider services.

It is upto your managment, and I think VITA centers will always welcome any sort of help. I volunter for the Detroit VITA programs and we always welcomed help from local businesses and non profits.

VITA centers are know by different names in different cities, so it is better to check with the IRS site.
