1040NR or 1040NR-EZ? 2007/03/17 08:36 Karma: 0
I am a Canadian citizen working in the US on TN visa.

I move to the US in August 2006.
I figured out that I am a non-resident alien after studying the “green card test” and the “substantial presence test”. I have been in the US in 2006 for 143 days in total after I got my TN visa issued.

My questions:
Which of the two forms 1040NR and 1040NR-EZ I need to file?
What other forms I need to file?
Is there any tax software out there that supports 1040NR? I know of some supporting 1040NR-EZ but I could not find any with 1040NR support.

Any help / input would greatly be appreciated.

There are many online tax software specilize in non resident tax returns. You can find reviews of the major ones at Non Resident Alien Tax software reviews .

Did you moved to US for the first time in 2006 and planning to be in US for 2007 ? Then you can take advantage of the "first year choice" and file a 1040 itself. First file for extension now. By june/july you will pass the substantial presnce test and you will be able to file normal 1040.

Why 1040 compared to 1040NR ? As a non resident you will loose many credits and deductions when you file 1040NR. So if possible file 1040 and you will get higher tax refund.
