You claim Child Tax Credit if the following critierias are meet.
1. You have a qualifying child. A qualifying child is one who is your dependent in your tax return, under age 17, and is related to you, and is a U.S. citizen or resident alien.
2. Unless your income is above phase out limits, you can claim $1,000 for each qualified child. The credit will phase-out depending on your filing status and income. The limits are Married Filing Jointly($110,000), Married Filing Separately($55,000) and all others ($75,000)

A Qualified child for Child Tax Credit is a "child" either related you as (biological, adopted, foster, step). Also your siblings, step-siblings, and grandchildren, nieces, nephews, if no one else qualifies to claim them.

Can I claim child tax credit for a child over 17 who is a full time student? We have a 17 year old who is still in school and still living at home with no job. Can we recieve the child tax credit on him this year?

You can't claim child tax credit for a child over 17 years. Being a students does not change the situations.

hi,
We currently claim Child Tax Credit but do not qualify for Working Tax Credit because we both work full time. Some friends have said that you can get free milk and dentist etc when you are Child Tax Credit.
