Home Improvement Deduction 2007/03/16 17:22 Karma: 0
We spent quite a bit of money to finish off our lower level, and I'm finding lots of places online that say it can be deducted, but I can't for the life of me find any place on the tax form to put it. I'm using Turbo Tax to do my taxes this year, and I'm only mildly familiar with it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The amount you spent for Home improvements add to the tax basis of your property. You will get tax benefit when you sell the home. You need to keep proper records to prove that the home improvements resulted in higher basis for your property.

Generally, you don't deduct anything in the year in which you did the home improvement unless you sell your home in the current year.

Again, home repairs don't qualify for the deduction as it is for maintaining your home in good condition and do not add to its value or prolong its life. But you may be able to combine a repair with a home improvement work and can add all cost of home improvments to your home basis
