The % of mortgage intrest & taxes as tax refund ? 2006/10/06 07:29 Karma: 0
I am planning to buy a new house and like to know much of the mortgage intrest and property tax I will get back as tax deductions. If an expense is tax deductible is it resonable to assume that i would get back around 20-30% of that expense as tax refund when i file my income taxes ?

I am single and make about 80K per year. And i looked up my tax bracket to be about 25-28%. So apparently my question now becomes can i roughly expect to get back 20-30% of the interest and taxes?

I hope some body is not trying to take advantage and mislead you. Your assumptions are not right. Mortgage interest and property taxes are deductible in Schedule A as itemized deductions. So you will not get the straight 20-30% tax deductions. To get any additional benefit, you need to have as total itemized deduction above the standard deduction. It is true Mortgage interests and property taxes take a bigger share of your itemized deductions and may give you some additional refund, but not the kind of refund you are expecting.
