How to claim Laptop Theft and installed softwares ? 2006/10/04 11:56 Karma: 0  
Some body stolen my laptop computer last month. I have installed many softwares (downloaded) in it and does not have backup copy. Can I claim the software prices as loss. I have purchase proofs (e-mail/credit card charges, etc).

You can claim Laptop Theft loss in your itemized deductions. You are
suppose to keep backup copies of the software you downloaded over Internet. IRS may not like to give you a break for your negligence.

Claiming lost software copy may be difficult as you only lost a copy of the same and once you get your new computer you can install the same if you have the originals disks. Now it is interesting if the thiefs stolen your orginal software copies as well. Then I think you can claim the loss.
